ED Treatment Through Telehealth: The Complete Guide

From familiar pills to newer combinations, understand your treatment options and how to get care online.

A couple lies in bed looking at each other affectionately.

If you’ve ever found yourself lying next to your partner, apologizing because you couldn’t get hard or stay hard during sex, you may find yourself replaying that moment afterward.

Then, the next time you’re about to have sex, the questions start: “Is it going to happen again?” “What will she think?” “Will she tell her friends?”

Those thoughts can follow you into the bedroom. You catch yourself checking whether you’re getting hard or whether you’re about to lose it, instead of being in the moment.

What you want is to walk into the bedroom knowing you're about to have great sex. That's why you're looking at ED treatments again. It's just what comes next that keeps holding you back.

Admitting to yourself you have erectile dysfunction is hard enough. Talking about it with your doctor is even harder.

A man sits thoughtfully on the edge of the bed, with his partner behind him.

You rehearse what you’ll say, sit through the appointment, and leave without mentioning it. Then you have to work yourself up to booking another visit and finally having that conversation.

Online ED providers give you new way to start that conversation, privately, from home.

This guide explains ED treatments from the beginning: what they do, who they’re for and how getting care online works, so you know what to expect before taking the next step.

Chapter 01 / 10

Understand ED and what treatment can help with

Erectile dysfunction, usually shortened to ED, means difficulty getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex. An occasional difficult night and a recurring problem are different experiences. If it keeps happening or concerns you, a clinician can help you understand it. ED is not an inevitable part of getting older. NIDDK overview

Erections, desire and ejaculation are different

You can want sex and still have trouble getting an erection. You can also have concerns about desire or ejaculation that need their own discussion.

Being specific helps. “I lose firmness during sex” gives a clinician different information from “I don’t feel interested in sex lately.” If both are happening, mention both.

There can be more than one contributor

Blood vessels, nerves and hormones all play a part in erections. Conditions such as diabetes, some medicines, smoking, stress and anxiety can contribute to difficulties. Physical and emotional factors can overlap. NIDDK symptoms and causes

That is why the useful first question is: What might be contributing, and what kind of help makes sense for me?

Treatment might involve medicine, addressing an underlying condition, counseling, a device or another option. The goal is to address the erection difficulty that is getting in the way of sex. Telehealth is one way to access assessment and some treatments. Finding out what is contributing comes first.

Chapter 02 / 10

Know when to seek help and what gets checked

You don’t need to wait until ED feels severe to bring it up. Recurring trouble, a change in how erections work, worry about sex, or disappointing results from a previous treatment are all useful things to discuss.

An assessment connects your experience with a treatment decision. You can explain what happens when you try to have sex, ask whether your medicines could play a part, and discuss an option you’ve seen online. That gives the clinician something more useful to work with than a product name.

What a clinician may ask

Expect questions about:

  • When the difficulty started and when it happens.
  • Your health conditions and any changes in your health.
  • Prescription medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements.
  • Sexual history, desire and previous ED treatments.
  • Stress, mood and relationship concerns that may be relevant.

Evaluation may also involve a physical examination or selected blood and other tests. The exact workup depends on your history and symptoms. NIDDK diagnosis

Online care may be a starting point, with local care when needed

A clinician may be able to assess you remotely. They may also want testing, an examination or specialist input before deciding on treatment.

For example, if you have previously used an ED medicine, details about how you took it and what happened can help guide the conversation. If a new symptom needs examination, an office visit can answer questions a screen cannot.

Bring your full medicine list. If you suspect a medicine is contributing to ED, ask the prescriber about it instead of stopping it yourself. NIDDK treatment

Chapter 03 / 10

Get to know the treatment options

Prescription pills are familiar, but ED care includes several approaches. If you’ve already tried a pill with disappointing results, it helps to know what else you can discuss. If you’re starting for the first time, the same overview helps you understand why a clinician might recommend one approach over another.

Oral medicines that support erection response

Sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil and avanafil belong to a group called PDE5 inhibitors.

During arousal, blood vessels in the penis relax so more blood can flow in. PDE5 medicines help support that response. Sexual stimulation is still needed. Taking a tablet does not automatically produce an erection or create sexual desire. EAU ED guideline

You may recognize the names Viagra for sildenafil, Cialis for tadalafil, Levitra as a familiar vardenafil brand name, and Stendra for avanafil. When comparing offers, begin with the ingredient and exact product.

Help with contributing factors

Depending on your situation, care can include changes to physical activity, smoking or other habits; management of an underlying condition; a clinician-led medicine review; or counseling for relevant emotional and relationship factors.

Testosterone treatment belongs in the discussion when low testosterone is established and treatment is appropriate. It is not a general substitute for ED treatment.

Devices and specialist treatments

Other options include vacuum erection devices, medicines injected into the penis or placed in the urethra, and surgical implants. These involve different practical steps, training and medical considerations. NIDDK treatment

An online service may offer only a portion of this treatment range. Ask what happens if you need something outside its menu. For the medicines it does offer, the next question is what you would actually receive.

Chapter 04 / 10

Compare medicines, routines and newer forms

Online ED offers can look very different: a generic tablet, a daily medicine, a dissolving product or a combination with several ingredients. Four details make them easier to understand: ingredient, routine, form and approval status.

How the familiar oral medicines differ

These examples describe labeled oral products. Your prescription determines how to use your exact medicine.

Use the table to identify questions for your clinician. If taking a medicine before sex would be difficult to plan, bring that up. If you prefer occasional use, say so. The routine needs to work alongside your medical history and the instructions for the product.

Swallowed, dissolving, sublingual and chewable are different forms

A swallowed tablet is familiar. An orally disintegrating tablet breaks down on the tongue. A sublingual product is used under the tongue. Other products may be chewed or supplied as liquids.

The instructions matter. Ask how to take the exact product you receive. A form name alone does not establish its speed or whether you can substitute it for another product.

For example, an approved orally disintegrating vardenafil tablet has its own instructions and is not interchangeable with the same-strength film-coated tablet. Vardenafil orally disintegrating label

Approved medicines and compounded products

FDA-approved brand medicines and approved generics have undergone the applicable FDA review. Compounded medicines are prepared to meet particular patient needs and are not FDA-approved finished products. FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness and quality before they are marketed. That distinction can help you ask better questions about a newer online offer:

  • What exactly is in it, and why is that combination proposed for me?
  • How should I use this form?
  • What evidence supports the benefits being described?
  • Which pharmacy prepares it, and who handles treatment questions?

What newer combinations can look like

Keeps, MEDVi, Rugiet and HeyFeels offer examples of compounded combinations that bring several ingredients into one treatment. Powerhouse is a sublingual tablet; QUAD is a sublingual liquid; Ready is a sublingual troche; and Quattro is described as a sublingual performance shot. The cards below show their provider-listed ingredients. Keeps Powerhouse, MEDVi QUAD, Rugiet Ready. Quattro details come from HeyFeels’ supplied product materials, September 2026.

Ask what each ingredient is intended to contribute and why that combination is being proposed for you. If speed or support for desire is part of the appeal, ask about evidence for that particular benefit. Research on a single ingredient does not automatically tell you how a finished combination performs.

Once you understand the product, you can look at what using it would involve.

Chapter 05 / 10

Know what to expect in everyday use

Imagine you’ve been prescribed a medicine and are planning an evening together. Do you need to take it beforehand? Does dinner affect the timing? And what does a longer treatment window mean? Your exact prescription supplies the instructions; understanding the terms helps you use those instructions correctly.

A treatment window is not a continuous erection

Tadalafil’s “up to 36 hours” describes a period during which it may help erection response. It does not mean an erection lasts 36 hours. Sexual stimulation is still needed. Cialis label

Likewise, a medicine’s earliest labeled timing is not a personal stopwatch. Follow the instructions for your prescription instead of transferring a tablet’s timing to a different formulation.

Daily and as-needed use create different routines

As-needed treatment involves taking medicine ahead of sexual activity according to the prescription. Daily tadalafil is taken at approximately the same time each day, without linking each dose to an anticipated sexual occasion. Cialis label

With a prescribed daily routine, taking the medicine becomes a regular part of the day. You do not need to choose when to take each dose based on whether sex is likely that evening. With an as-needed routine, you plan the dose around anticipated sexual activity. Discuss which arrangement you would find easier to follow.

If results are disappointing, bring back useful details

Tell the clinician which product you used, when you took it, whether food or alcohol was involved, what response you noticed and whether there were side effects.

Reviewing correct use and relevant health factors can be part of managing a poor response. Different medicines or other treatment approaches may also be considered. EAU ED guideline

A note such as “I took it after dinner, waited this long, and noticed this effect” gives the clinician details to review. Treatment changes belong in that follow-up conversation. Before starting or changing anything, make sure the safety instructions are clear.

Chapter 06 / 10

Understand safety and when to get help

ED treatment should fit your health and the other medicines you take. Give safety questions their own space in the consultation, even if you have used a similar product before.

Important interactions to disclose

PDE5 medicines must not be taken with nitrates, including nitroglycerin and recreational nitrites known as “poppers.” The combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Certain other medicines, such as riociguat, must also not be combined with PDE5 medicines. Tell the clinician everything you take so those interactions can be checked.

Blood-pressure medicines, alpha blockers, other medicines, kidney or liver problems, and cardiovascular health can affect treatment suitability or instructions. Some products have additional considerations. A complete review is more useful than trying to check one interaction yourself. Viagra label, Cialis label

Do not increase your dose or add another ED medicine on your own. Alcohol can also increase certain side effects, including dizziness or low blood pressure. Ask about alcohol use with your prescribed medicine. Stendra label

Side effects differ by product

Common effects can include headache, flushing, indigestion or nasal congestion. Tadalafil can also cause back pain and muscle aches. Ask what to expect from your exact product and how to contact the clinician if something bothers you. Vardenafil label, Cialis label

Be careful with unverified sexual-enhancement products

FDA has identified products marketed for sexual enhancement that contain hidden drug ingredients. A “natural” label does not tell you whether a product is free of prescription drugs or interactions. FDA product alerts

Chapter 07 / 10

See how telehealth can make starting easier

An adult speaks during a remote health consultation in a private room.

You might have the question ready and still put off making an appointment. Perhaps you don’t want to raise ED across an examination desk, or you can’t easily leave work for a visit. Telehealth changes some of the practical steps between wanting help and talking to a clinician.

Start the conversation from home

Picture opening a secure intake from a quiet room at home, with your medicine list beside you. You can put the concern into words and have your questions ready for the consultation. If you’ve been postponing that conversation, this may be an easier way to begin.

For a phone or video visit, you can choose a setting where you can speak freely without someone nearby hearing you.

A private setting also helps protect the conversation. Use the service’s secure communication tools and consider who can see your screen or hear you. HHS patient privacy

Spend less time getting to care

A remote visit can remove the journey to an office. You may be able to fit a scheduled conversation into a break instead of arranging transport, leaving work and making the return trip. If distance or a busy day has kept pushing the appointment back, removing that travel can make room for it. HHS telehealth benefits

Choose a communication format that fits

Telehealth can involve a live phone or video visit. Some services use questionnaires and messages that you and the clinician complete at different times. HHS direct-to-consumer care

That exchange at different times is called asynchronous care. Where offered, you could complete the intake after work, when you have your health information nearby, rather than finding a time when you and the clinician are both available.

Check when the clinician will respond and how to ask follow-up questions. The ability to submit an intake outside office hours does not mean a prescribing decision happens immediately.

Keep the practical details in one place

Where offered, secure follow-up messages give you a way to report how treatment is going without arranging a separate journey. Home delivery can also remove a trip to collect medicine.

Those conveniences matter beyond the first order. If a side effect bothers you or a refill is due, you should know where to send the question and when to expect an answer. Check the service’s follow-up, refill and delivery arrangements before signing up.

Chapter 08 / 10

Follow the online care process

What happens after you click “Get started”? You should be able to follow the assessment, understand who makes the prescribing decision and know how any medicine reaches you. Here is how those steps can work.

Step 1: Check eligibility and availability

Confirm that the service treats people in your location and that you meet its eligibility requirements. Telehealth practice rules depend in part on where the patient is located. HHS licensing

If you travel, ask whether your location changes the care the service can provide.

Step 2: Share your history and goals

Complete the requested medical information and consultation. Have your medicine list nearby. Tell the clinician what you would like help with and what you have already tried.

Step 3: Receive a clinical decision

The clinician may recommend a prescription, ask for more information or testing, recommend local evaluation, or decide a prescription is unsuitable. Selecting an advertised product does not settle that decision.

Illustrative example: You complete an intake describing erection difficulty. If the information supports remote treatment, the clinician may prescribe an appropriate option. If examination or additional information is needed, the next step may be local care or testing. The same starting screen can lead to different care paths.

Assessment can lead to different next steps

Records or testing may be needed

Step 4: Understand fulfillment and instructions

If medicine is prescribed, confirm the pharmacy, how you receive it, what you pay and the instructions for the exact product.

The platform may organize the service; the clinician evaluates and prescribes; the pharmacy dispenses. Ask who answers clinical questions and who handles delivery or billing problems. For online pharmacy checks, FDA recommends looking for a prescription requirement, appropriate state licensing and access to a licensed pharmacist. FDA BeSafeRx FAQs

Step 5: Know how follow-up works

Before you start, find out how to report side effects, discuss response, request changes and coordinate care with your regular doctor. Good questions include: “Who reviews my message?” and “How quickly should I expect a reply?”

Chapter 09 / 10

Compare providers and know what you’ll pay

Two sites might both offer ED treatment and still ask for different commitments. One may use a live consultation; another may begin with messages. One price may cover medicine and shipping; another may have separate charges. Compare the treatment, the care and the payment arrangement together.

Compare the treatment and the service

Ask:

  • What ingredient, form and routine would I be discussing?
  • Is the finished medicine FDA-approved or compounded?
  • How does the consultation work, and who can treat me in my state?
  • Which pharmacy fills the prescription?
  • How do follow-up and treatment changes work?
  • What happens if I need care outside the service’s scope?

For a starting shortlist, explore Health Geek’s online ED provider guide. It covers five online options and explains their offerings. Use it to narrow your questions, then check the details of the service you are considering.

Look beyond a monthly headline

Write down the consultation charge, medicine quantity, shipping charge and billing interval. Check whether a price is introductory, whether you must prepay for several months and what renewal costs.

Hypothetical billing example, not actual provider prices:

Compare at a glance

Advertised arrangement$30 per month, billed every three months

Charge now$90

What that charge coversOne three-month billing period, with medicine quantity to confirm

Advertised arrangement$35 billed monthly

Charge now$35

What that charge coversOne monthly billing period, with medicine quantity to confirm

The first arrangement has a lower stated monthly cost but a larger upfront charge. You still need the quantity, consultation and shipping details to judge total value. Neither price tells you how often you should use a medicine.

Ask when the next payment happens, how cancellation works and what can be refunded. A subscription is a billing arrangement; it should not leave you guessing about the care or medicine you receive.

Check coverage directly

If you want to use insurance, check your plan’s covered-drug list and pharmacy network, as well as the provider’s insurance arrangements. Do not assume that a particular ED medicine or online service is covered. HealthCare.gov prescription coverage

For HSA or FSA payment, confirm eligibility for the exact expense with your plan administrator before relying on it.

Chapter 10 / 10

Take a prepared next step

You can start the conversation with a sentence as simple as, “I’m having trouble getting or keeping an erection, and I’d like to talk about treatment.” You don’t have to arrive with a medicine already chosen.

Describe what you want help with, whether that is keeping firmness during sex, understanding a change or finding a routine you can follow. Then use this checklist to put the useful details in one place.

Your appointment preparation checklist

  • List your medicines and supplements, including anything used recreationally.
  • Note your health conditions and recent changes.
  • Describe the erection concern, when it happens and what you want help with.
  • Record any previous ED treatment, how you used it, its effects and side effects.
  • Ask about the exact medicine, form, routine and important interactions.
  • Ask how follow-up, pharmacy fulfillment and the full cost work.

You can bring those notes to your regular doctor, an appropriate local clinician or a telehealth consultation. If you would like to start from home, compare online services by the treatment options, consultation, follow-up and full cost we’ve covered.

See five online options and what they offer, then choose where to begin your treatment conversation.
