Dang, it’s really happening. Your hair is thinning, and you’re finally ready to do something about it, but where do you start? You Google it. Three hours later, you’ve got 17 tabs open and more treatments than you knew existed.

Generic or brand-name? One ingredient or a combo? Pills, chews, sprays, serums, shampoos? What are all the extras for? And why does every plan have a different price? It’s enough to make you want to tear your hair out. Please don’t. We’re trying to keep it. Don’t fret.

We did the geeky work for you. We compared Happy Head, Hims, Keeps, Motivated and Ro to help you sort through the options. We’ll show you what each offers, what it costs and how much help you can get choosing a treatment. Start with the highlights, then dig into the full menus and prices for the ones that catch your eye.

What We Looked At

Hair-loss programs don’t all work the same way. One might keep the price low; another might give you more treatment options. What matters most depends on what you’re looking for.

So we looked at each provider’s treatments, prices, support and subscription terms, and put the details in one place. The providers appear alphabetically, with a label highlighting something we like about each. Their order isn’t a ranking.

For background on the treatments themselves, we used drug labels, FDA information and dermatology guidance.

Combination treatments cost more, and some renew every 25 days, so check the price and billing schedule for the formula you choose. First, Know What You’re Treating

Before choosing a pill or spray, it helps to know why your hair is thinning. Male-pattern hair loss is one possibility, but a treatment aimed at that pattern won’t address every cause. Sudden, patchy or unexplained loss deserves a clinician’s assessment before you settle on a product.

With online prescription care, you generally provide health information for a licensed clinician to review. If treatment is appropriate, the clinician may prescribe it and a pharmacy fills the order. Filling out a questionnaire doesn’t guarantee a prescription. 7

The Treatments You’ll See Most Often

Provider menus can make this look more complicated than it is. Start with the medicine, then look at how you’d take or apply it.

Finasteride

reduces the formation of DHT, a hormone involved in male-pattern hair loss. You’ll see it offered as an oral tablet and as an ingredient in some combination formulas. 1, 9

Minoxidil

is another familiar name. Topical minoxidil is applied to the scalp and can help stimulate hair growth. Some providers also offer oral minoxidil, which is a different prescription to discuss with a clinician. 2, 3

Combination treatments

put more than one ingredient into a pill, chew, spray or serum. Check the exact formula rather than assuming two products with similar names contain the same things. A longer ingredient list alone doesn’t tell you which treatment will work better for you.

You may also come across dutasteride in a treatment menu, plus shampoos and supplements sold alongside prescription options. Ask what role each item is meant to play in your plan. 4, 8

What the Labels Mean

An ingredient’s name doesn’t tell you whether the specific product is FDA-approved. Oral finasteride is available in FDA-approved products for male-pattern hair loss in men. The 5% topical-minoxidil label cited below covers men with gradual thinning on the top of the scalp. Those labels don’t apply to every formula containing the same ingredients or every kind of hair loss. 1, 2

Off-label

means a medicine is prescribed for a use outside its FDA-approved labeling. Oral minoxidil tablets are labeled for severe high blood pressure, and dutasteride capsules are labeled for an enlarged prostate. Ask why a clinician recommends either for hair loss and what monitoring it involves. 3, 4

Compounded

means ingredients have been combined or altered for a patient’s needs. Compounded drugs aren’t FDA-approved and don’t undergo FDA premarket review for safety, effectiveness or quality. FDA also says no topical finasteride formulation is approved. 5, 6

Shampoos, conditioners and supplements are separate from prescription medicines. Dietary supplements aren’t FDA-approved to treat hair loss. 8

Questions Worth Asking Before You Choose

A provider may catch your eye, but the right treatment depends on more than its starting price. Before signing up, ask:

  • What’s causing my hair loss? What supports that assessment, and should I get an in-person evaluation?
  • Which treatment fits my routine? Ask about the exact formula, how to use it, and its possible benefits and side effects.
  • Who can help after I start? Find out how to reach a clinician if you have side effects, questions or concerns about your progress. Ask which pharmacy fills the prescription and how to reach its pharmacist. FDA recommends using a state-licensed pharmacy. 7
  • What will I actually pay? Check what’s due today, the renewal price, the shipment schedule and what happens if you cancel while an order is being processed.
  • When will we check in? Ask when your clinician would reassess the treatment and what ongoing care involves.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does hair-loss treatment take?

Think in months, rather than days. The Propecia label says benefit may take three months or more; the 5% topical-minoxidil label says some men may need at least four months. Those are product-specific expectations, not deadlines or guaranteed results. Ask your clinician when to review progress for your particular treatment. 1, 2

Do I need to keep using it?

Continued use may be needed to maintain the benefit. Both oral finasteride and topical minoxidil labeling describe loss of benefit after stopping. That makes the ongoing routine and cost worth thinking about before you begin. If you want to stop or change treatment, discuss the plan and likely effects with your clinician. 1, 2

Are finasteride and minoxidil the same?

No. Finasteride reduces DHT formation, while topical minoxidil can stimulate hair growth. Their uses, risks and formulations differ. As the treatment section explains, oral minoxidil for hair loss also has a different regulatory status from labeled topical minoxidil. Ask which exact product your clinician is recommending and why. 1, 2, 3, 9

Does topical treatment mean no systemic side effects?

No. A scalp application doesn't necessarily keep a medicine's effects limited to the scalp. FDA says absorption of topical finasteride into the body is expected and has received reports of side effects. Discuss the exact formula's risks, safe handling and potential transfer to others with your clinician. This alert concerns topical finasteride, not every topical product equally. 6

Can every kind of hair loss be treated online?

Not every cause is suitable for the same treatment or assessment route. Sudden, patchy or unexplained loss may require further evaluation. An online clinician can assess the information you provide and decide whether prescribing is appropriate or another evaluation is needed. A questionnaire alone can't guarantee that you'll receive a prescription. 2, 7

Will insurance cover treatment?

Coverage depends on your plan and the exact product or service. Check the covered-drug list, pharmacy network and any prior-authorization requirement with your insurer. Medication, clinical visits and other products can have different coverage rules, and prior authorization doesn't guarantee payment. A provider offering a service doesn't establish that your plan covers it. 10, 11
